The three parts of an auto steering kit
- GNSS antenna: receives signals from GPS and other satellite constellations and computes the tractor's position several times a second.
- Steering unit: a motor fitted to the existing steering wheel (or a hydraulic valve on larger tractors) that turns the wheel the way a driver would.
- Display terminal: where the operator sets the field, the working width and the line to follow, and watches progress.
Why correction signals matter
Raw satellite positioning is accurate to a few metres, which is useless for a 3 ft implement. Correction data from a base station or a correction service reduces the error to centimetres; this is what makes the ±10 cm pass-to-pass figure possible. The correction source and the local signal conditions set the accuracy you actually get, so a demo on your own field is the only honest test.
Pass to pass versus absolute accuracy
Pass-to-pass accuracy describes how closely the next pass lines up with the previous one, within a short period. It is what matters for spraying, cultivating and mowing without overlap. Absolute, year-on-year accuracy is a stricter figure that matters for returning to the same planting rows next season; it needs a fixed base station or a correction service with a stable reference.
What auto steering pays off on
- Spraying: no double-dosed overlap strips and no missed strips, so chemical use and crop damage both fall.
- Inter-row cultivation in cotton or vegetables, where a drift of a few centimetres damages plants.
- Long, straight passes that tire a driver, and night work where lines are hard to see.
- Headlands: Basic U-turn gives a one-click turn in tight spaces; Smart U-turn makes the whole turn hands-free.
Beyond steering: tracking, tasks and data
Once a tractor knows where it is, the rest of a monitoring system follows. Farm Sathi's kit adds tractor tracking, task assignment from a phone and real-time sync of field data, so a farm with more than one machine can see all of them on one screen.
